Before you ask

Do we need planning permission?
Usually, yes. Solar carports in commercial car parks are structures, so most sites need consent from the local authority. Listed buildings, conservation areas and airport-adjacent sites need extra care. We assess the likely planning route as part of the site survey, before you commit to anything.
Will the car park have to close?
Not entirely. Work is normally phased row by row so most of the car park stays open. On a multi-site rollout we schedule around your trading patterns — out of season, overnight or in stages. The programme is agreed before work starts.
How long does an installation take?
Groundworks and steelwork for a modest array typically run to a few weeks on site, with larger schemes phased over longer. Lead times for structures and grid connection usually set the overall programme rather than the build itself.
Do we have to pay for it upfront?
Not necessarily. Capital purchase gives the best long-term return, but funded routes exist — including power purchase agreements, where a funder covers the installation and you buy the electricity generated. We will set out the options that apply to your sites.
What about the grid connection?
Any commercial array needs the distribution network operator's agreement, and on larger schemes that can take longer than the build. We identify the constraint early, because a site that cannot export easily is a very different proposition to one that can.
What maintenance is involved?
Very little day to day. Panels need occasional cleaning, inverters are the component most likely to need replacing over the asset's life, and the structure needs periodic inspection. Ongoing monitoring and maintenance programmes are available.
How long will the structure last?
Steel carport structures are typically engineered for a 25 to 40 year design life, with panels warranted for around 25 years at a declining output. The structure normally outlasts the first generation of panels, which can be replaced without rebuilding.
